VIZIO VF550M Good Life HdTV

On this year’s CES, Vizio caused a stir by announcing the VF551XVT, a 55-inch HDTV with local dimming LED backlighting and 240Hz processing for rock-bottom price of $ 1,999. If you look closely at the model number of this review, you will notice that says VF550XVT. A figure makes a big difference in this case, the model reviewed here, none of these features, but it still costs about $ 1,999 in stores.

Still reading? Good. The VF550XVT among the least expensive 55-inch LCD screens on the market, but it has become less attractive at this point in her life. First, careful readers will realize that if they just wait until June, when the company will ship VF551XVT, they will more TV (judging from the spec sheet) to obtain roughly the same money. We expect Vizio to the decrease of this model at that point, or even stop it. Secondly, the overall performance of the VF550XVT is nothing special. We found its color accuracy, but found his black level performance and handling dejudder disappointing compared with other LCD sets. That said, if you’re on a budget, want a really big screen is, if 52 inches is just too small and have your heart set onLCD instead of plasma, it makes a tempting target VF550XVT Vizio.

Design

These big-screen LCD screen looks modest for the most part, with the standard glossy black frame around the screen. But the speaker nondetachable bar at the bottom, with its silver color, reflective supports, spherical, and see through panel exposing the wall behind the TV, goes a little too much, and we expect you either love or hate. We fall into the latter camp.

The 55-inch VF550XVT measures 51.5 inches wide and 36 cm high by 13.5 inches deep and weighs a slim 86 pounds with stand attached. Remove nonswiveling stand and its dimensions are 51.5 by 33.9 by 5 inches and weighing only 73.8 lbs.

We found Vizio’s remoteness, with its oversized chrome cursor cross surrounded by a well-spread, easily modulated, yellow-lit keys. Highlights include a section that provides direct access to various types offer input, “A, B, C and D” buttons for other devices like cable boxes that double as picture-in-picture controls, and the possibility of three other command devices.Many of the keys double up, but the remote handles this well, we appreciate that the OFT key used to share control of the bright red “record” button, for example.

The company has revamped its menu system for xvt models, squeezing the left of the screen and improving the graphics. The menus’ usability has taken a step backwards, however. We were annoyed by the fact that you can only see one parameter at a time and that too much scrolling is needed for all of the settings menu.

Features

Vizio VF550XVT equipped with a 120Hz refresh rate and the accompanying dejudder processing. Processing can smooth out vibrations inherent in moving video, especially film, and can also help alleviate blurring in motion (see Performance for details).

A good selection of picture adjustments is at hand, including up to nine fully adjustable picture modes. Four of these modes, golf, baseball, basketball and football, are used to the idea that the wrong image settings can be optimized for specific sports are maintained. In case you’re wondering, we detected no tangible benefits to watch a football match in the mode, said unlike, say, golf mode, but it is nice to have the extra adjustability afforded by the four extra foto modes, regardless their names. Unfortunately, none of the picture modes are independent per input.

No less than five total HDMI inputs highlight the excellent connectivity of the Vizio VF550XT.The company is four on the back panel and placed fifth on the side, for as many HDMI inputs as we have seen anyVizio HDTV. The side panel also sports one of the two component-video inputs, along with an AV input with composite video. The back gets the second component input, PC input (1920 × 1080 maximum resolution), an AV input with composite and S-Video, one RF input for antenna and cable, an optical digital audio output, and a analog stereo output.

The side panel is likewise packed with connections, including a fifth HDMI and a second component-video jack.

Performance

Photo quality falls short of the better VF550XVT Vizio LCDs on the market, characterized by relatively light black levels dejudder processing is a step behind the competition, and worse-than-average off-angle performance. We found the color accuracy, however, and considering the price, this LCD still produces decent enough photos to satisfy the viewers.

Black level: The Vizio VF550XVT produced one of the lighter shades of black we’ve seen a modern LCD. In dark scenes, such as the outdoor night shots in Chapter 12, dark areas like the night sky, beams, and the water under the boat, for example, all appeared a good deal lighter than the other displays in the room. Shadow details, like the folds of the tuxedos of opera goers were a bit less pronounced than in our benchmark scenes, but as good as the Samsung LCD.

Color accuracy: The Vizio better than the Panasonic plasma in the area, but not like the Samsung LCD. Skin tones, like the pale back and shoulders of Strawberry Fields, looked accurate in midbright and dark areas, albeit slightly flushed in a bright area. The white walls of the hotel room looked a bit redder than they would like to see, but the difference is subtle.Primary colors such as blue green palm trees and boats in Haiti, were as accurate as our reference displays, but the color saturation is not as deep as the Vizio on one of the others. We attribute that to give the lighter Vizio’s black levels.

Our main gripe was with color in dark areas. Blacks and very dark shadows on the VF550XVT had the characteristic blue glow seen on many LCD screens, and this was no exception. For comparison, the Samsung has a slightly green tint to very dark areas, but it was not nearly as ubiquitous as the Vizio’s blue. That said, the bluish tint is not too distracting.

Video processing: Speaking of distractions, we also checked the VF550XVT’s dejudder processing. Dejudder on a so-equipped HDTV is designed to provide a smoother appearance to film-based material, although in our view makes the movie look too much like video-24-frame vibration is part of what makes film look like film, and we prefer look at the smoother appearance of typical dejudder processing, the Vizio’s included.
