How wide does a flat-panel TV stand need to be?

All the plasma and LCD TV stands I see imply that a stand should be as wide as the TV itself. I can understand a weight maximum for safety’s sake, but is there any reason why a stand needs to be wider than the actual base of the TV, instead of the screen of the TV?

No there is not. You simply don’t want to bump on the TV though.
