Black Adder V: The Specials – Fullscreen Subtitle $14.99 Includes:Comic Relief Special: Black Adder:The Cavalier Years (1988) Black Adder’s Christmas Carol (1988) Black Adder Back and Forth (1999) Comic Relief Special: Black Adder:The Cavalier Years The Blackadder gang reteamed to perform this 15-minute sketch on the 1988 @BBC Comic Relief telethon. The year is 1648: King Charles I (Stephen Fry) is sentenced to death by Oliver Cromwell (Warren Clarke). It is up to Charles’ loyal subjects (indeed, his only subjects) Sir Edmund Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson) and Baldrick (Tony Robinson) to ride to the rescue. First telecast on February 5, 1988, “The Cavalier Years” has since been released to home video. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Black Adder’s Christmas Carol The cast and crew of the satirical British comedy series Blackadder reunited for this perverse one-hour spin on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Rowan Atkinson stars as Ebeneezer Blackadder, a kindly and beloved London businessman. Alas, Ebeneezer is too warm-hearted and generous to suit his greedy, grasping ancestors, who on Christmas Eve appear in spectral form to force their descendant to live down to Blackadder family tradition. Also appearing are Tony Robinson as Baldrick, Robbie Coltrane as The Spirit of Christmas, Miriam Margoyles as Queen Victoria, Jim Broadbent as Prince Albert, and Miranda Richardson in the dual role of Elizabeth I and Asphyxia XIX. A Blackadder’s Christmas Carol made its British TV bow on December 22, 1988. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Black Adder Back and Forth Rowan Atkinson returns to the role of royal scoundrel Edmund Blackadder in this hilariously skewered romp through British history. On the eve of the New Millennium, the latest incarnations of Blackadder and his eternal flunkey Baldrick step into a time machine, purportedly based on a design by Leonardo da Vinci. On a dare, the boys agree to check out a few historical high points — only to become totally lost in time and space, bouncing back and forth (hence the title) from the Jurassic Period, to the era of Robin Hood, to the reign of Queen Elizabeth, back again to 1999, and back again “forward into the past.” Several of the regular performers from the previous Black Adder TV series are once again in attendance, including stars Atkinson and Tony Robinson, Miranda Richardson, Hugh Laurie, and Rik Mayall. Produced for exhibition at England’s Millennium Dome on January 1, 2000, Black Adder V: Back and Forth was previewed on December 6, 1999, and subsequently telecast on the Sky TV satellite service. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Dennis Miller: The HBO Specials [3 Discs] – Collector’s $24.99 Includes:Dennis Miller: Mr. Miller Goes to Washington (1988) Dennis Miller: Black & White (1992) Dennis Miller: Live From Washington D.C. (1993) Dennis Miller: Citizen Arcane (1996) Dennis Miller: The Millennium Special: 1,000 Years, 100 Laughs, 10 Really Good Ones (1999) Dennis Miller: The Raw Feed (2003) Dennis Miller: All In (2006) Dennis Miller: Mr. Miller Goes to Washington Not yet the erstwhile talkshow host and film actor, Dennis Miller was still doing the “Weekend Update” on Saturday Night Live when he made this concert video. Taped before a DC audience which includes several of the pundits and poobahs that Miller has previously skewered on the air, the video proves that most people are willing to laugh at themselves, even those whose political activities aren’t terribly funny. Miller has said on several occasions that he wants to invoke anger from his targets, and hates it when one of his victims makes a public statement praising Miller for his technique, so maybe the gales of laughter from the audience were in themselves a means of getting even. NBC news commentator Edwin Newman shows up at the beginning of the film, purportedly to “prep” Miller. Not rated, the 60-minute Live From Washington It’s Dennis Miller bars no holds when it comes to profanity. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Dennis Miller: Black & White Former Saturday Night Live Weekend Update anchor Dennis Miller talks politics, takes aim at President George Bush, and offers his patently irreverent, rapid-fire take on contemporary pop-culture in this stand-up comedy performance captured before a live audience. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Dennis Miller: Live From Washington D.C. Dennis Miller rants just as we have come to expect from him about everything and anything. Always controversial, this trip to our nation’s capital seems to make him even more feisty than he normally is. Miller tackles such subjects as the presence of women reporters in men’s locker rooms, fatherhood, the women of Baywatch, and yes, of course, Politics with a capital P. A must-see for any die-hard Dennis Miller fan. ~ Laura Mahnken, Rovi Dennis Miller: Citizen Arcane The closing event at the second annual U.S. Comedy Arts Festival, this performance by former Saturday Night Live Weekend Update anchor Dennis Miller was captured live at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen, Colorado. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Dennis Miller: The Millennium Special: 1,000 Years, 100 Laughs, 10 Really Good Ones The acid-tongued comic guides a tour of the century’s highlights and low lifes, including rants on technology, Hitler, the Cold War and the future of the planet. Norm Macdonald also appears to offer his skewed look at each era. ~ TV Guide, Rovi Dennis Miller: The Raw Feed Dennis Miller gained fame as the host of Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live in the late ’80s. His cultural-reference-laden act is recorded on this concert film, which captures Miller tackling a series of political and societal topics, including advertising, sex, and the o |

The Specials – Widescreen $8.99 A satire of comic-book superheroes in the same vein as the 1999 Mystery Men, The Specials is set in a parallel universe where gangs of superheroes regularly compete against one another for glory or, failing that, flattering action-figure likenesses. The Specials are one of these gangs, and not a very good one at that. Composed of the Weevil (Rob Lowe), the group’s most popular member, Amok (Jamie Kennedy), a potty-mouthed shape-shifter, group leader Strobe (Thomas Haden Church), and the constantly growing or shrinking Minute Man (James Gunn), the Specials are more concerned with their image than in actually doing anything heroic. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi |

Doctor Who: Complete Specials (5 Disc) – AC3 Dolby $33.99 Includes:Doctor Who: The Next Doctor – 2008 Christmas Special (2008) Doctor Who: The End of Time, Part 1 (2009) Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars (2009) Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead (2009) Doctor Who: The End of Time, Part 2 (2010) Doctor Who: The Next Doctor – 2008 Christmas Special The holidays should be a time for peace on earth, but David Tennant’s Doctor Who doesn’t get to rest in this special that takes him to Christmas Eve, 1851. With the help of another Doctor — who may be a future incarnation of himself — the Doctor must battle a CyberKing, CyberMen, and Cybershades who are wreaking havoc on the streets of Victorian-era London. As if that weren’t enough, it may take two Doctors to fight a woman who is in league with the Cybermen. ~ Kimber Myers, Rovi Doctor Who: The End of Time, Part 1 No synopsis available. Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars The Doctor visits a base on Mars, where he helps Adelaide Brooke (Lindsay Duncan), the base’s commander, combat a crisis from beneath the planet’s surface that threatens both humanity and the Time Lord’s beliefs. ~ Michael Chant, Rovi Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead The BBC continues its successful quest to rebrand the iconic Doctor Who franchise with this 2009 special. David Tennant continues as the 10th incarnation of the Doctor, joined by Michelle Ryan as Lady Christina, on a bus trip that sends them on a journey tumbling through time and ending on the Planet of the Dead — but what dangers lurk on its surface? ~ Robert Silva, Rovi Doctor Who: The End of Time, Part 2 No synopsis available. |

The Specials [LP] $19.99 This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Specials: Terry Hall, Neville Staples (vocals); Lynval Golding, Roddy Radiation (guitar); Jerry Dammers (organ); Horace Gentleman (bass); John “Brad” Bradbury (drums).Additional personnel: Rico Rodriguez, Dick Cuthell (horns).Producers: Elvis Costello, The Specials.Reissue producers: Nigel Reeve, Rob Owen.Includes liner notes by Adrian Thrill. All tracks have been digitally remastered.Produced by Elvis Costello, this self-titled 1979 debut quickly became gospel to the wave of ska then sweeping England. Infusing the catchy, jumpy music developed by artists like the Skatalites and Prince Buster a generation before them with punk’s youthful disenfranchisement, bands like the Specials, the Selecter and Madness gave birth to a movement, one which strove for such noble goals as racial unity (then a particularly sore issue in Britain) and non-violence. THE SPECIALS states these ideals magnificently, wrapping them in tunes bursting with energy–tight, sincere and masterful.Ska’s musical style is an easy one to discern–syncopated rhythm guitar, infectious rhythms, horn sections a-go-go; vocals often reach the level of a rant, and the lyrics are usually of utmost import. The album’s opener and by far its most recognized tune “A Message To You Rudy” spoke frankly and directly to those youngsters tempted towards the gangster life. “Do the Dog” is more outright social statement–an earnest appeal not to fall into life’s easy, safe categories, be they military or social. Societal issues of every stripe are attacked–from “Stupid Marriage” to “Concrete Jungle.” |

A Holiday Romance – Fullscreen $5.99 Why is it that, in holiday-themed TV movies, someone always comes to a small town to close down some business or other during Christmas week? In the case of A Holiday Romance, it is straitlaced school administrator Cal Peterson (Gerald McRaney), who arrives in town in the middle of the holiday season for the purpose of shutting down a local school that has been deemed extraneous. Inevitably, of course, Peterson will change his mind once he finds true love, as personified by winsome music teacher Lily Waite, played by Naomi Judd. About the only surprise in the film is the fact that neither Judd nor anyone else sings a country song at any point in the story. CBS brought forth A Holiday Romance on December 8, 1999. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Children’s Holiday Movie Collection - $8.99 Includes:A Hobo’s Christmas (1987) How the Toys Saved Christmas (1997) The Man Who Saved Christmas (2002) In Search of Santa (2004) Christmas in Wonderland (2007), MPAA Rating: PG A Hobo’s Christmas The hobo in the made-for-TV A Hobo’s Christmas is played by Barnard Hughes. Drifting from place to place, Hughes finds himself in his hometown of Salt Lake City at Christmastime. Here he hopes to close old wounds and be reunited with his unforgiving son Gerald McRaney, and get to know the grandchildren he has never met. McRaney, still resenting the fact that Hughes ran out on his family 25 years earlier, gives his father only one day with his grandkids; after that, he’s expected to leave and never come back. Everything that usually happens in a feel-good film of this nature does happen, but getting there is half the fun. If you missed the location-filmed A Hobo’s Christmas when it was first telecast on December 6, 1987, despair not: the film is sure to pop up again on cable during the Yuletide season. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi How the Toys Saved Christmas In this animated feature from Disney, Santa Claus’ anointed helper Granny Rose (the voice of Mary Tyler Moore) falls ill and turns her toy-delivery duties over to the sneaky and conniving profiteer Mr. Grimm (voice of Tony Randall). When the toys discover Grimm’s plans to sell them off come Christmas morning, they band together to foil his plan and reach their intended homes on time. ~ Sarah Welsh, Rovi The Man Who Saved Christmas Jason Alexander stars as fabled toy manufacturer, A.C. Gilbert in this Capraesque TV movie. An overachiever since his school days, Gilbert surprises his stern father (Ed Asner) by forsaking a career in medicine to pursue an entirely different business. Creating the now legendary Erector Set, A.C. sets up his own toy company in 1913, an enterprise which is raking in millions within two years. But with America’s entry into WWI, the U.S. government prevails upon Gilbert to convert his factory into a munitions plant. Though at heart a pacifist, Gilbert agrees to do so, secure in the belief that he will be able to return to toys once the hostilities have ceased. Alas, the Government has other plans. At their behest, Gilbert reluctantly mounts a “Buy Bonds, Not Toys” campaign designed to divert the money normally spent on Christmas gifts to the war effort. Is this the end of Christmastime as millions of children know it, or will Gilbert be able to salvage both the holiday and the spirit of giving? The Man Who Saved Christmas debuted December 15, 2002, on CBS. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi In Search of Santa Hilary Duff and Haylie Duff lend their voices to this heartwarming animated tale for the holiday season. Princess Crystal (voice of Hilary Duff) is a penguin who one day finds a sleigh bell. Crystal is certain that it came from one of Santa Claus’s reindeer, but not everyone else is convinced, so Crystal and her sister Lucinda (voice of Haylie Duff) decide to go to the North Pole and take t |

Holiday Comedy Collection: Elf/National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation/Fred Claus [3 Discs] – 3 Pack $24.99 Includes:National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989), MPAA Rating: PG-13 Elf (2003), MPAA Rating: PG Fred Claus (2007), MPAA Rating: PG National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation Chevy Chase, star of National Lampoon’s Vacation and its sequel, is back as the paterfamilias of the Griswold family (including Beverly D’Angelo as his missus) to skewer the Yuletide season. Chevy mugs, trips, falls, mashes his fingers and stubs his toes as he prepares to invite numerous dysfunctional relatives to his household to celebrate Christmas. Amidst the more outrageous sight gags (including the electrocution of a cat as the Christmas tree is lit) the film betrays a sentimental streak, with old wounds healing and long-estranged relatives reuniting in the Griswold living room. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation was still capable of attracting an audience five years after its release — it was one of the top-rated seasonal TV specials of 1994, outrating even the first network telecast of It’s a Wonderful Life. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Elf For his sophomore stab at directing, actor/writer/director Jon Favreau (Swingers, Made), took on this holiday comedy starring Saturday Night Live-alum Will Ferrell. Ferrell stars as Buddy, a regular-sized man who was raised as an elf by Santa Claus (Edward Asner). When the news is finally broken to Buddy that he’s not a real elf, he decides to head back to his place of birth, New York City, in search of his biological family. Elf also stars James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, Zooey Deschanel, and Bob Newhart. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi Fred Claus Santa’s black-sheep brother gets a much-needed shot at redemption in this holiday comedy reuniting actor Vince Vaughn and director David Dobkin (Clay Pigeons, Wedding Crashers). It’s not easy being the brother of a benevolent and beloved saint, and no one knows that better than Fred Claus (Vaughn). After struggling for years to live up to the example set by his younger sibling Nicholas (Paul Giamatti), Fred has finally given up. These days Fred is working as a repo man taken to stealing the items he repossesses, and his shady tactics have just landed him in jail. While Mrs. Claus vehemently insists that Fred fend for himself, Nicholas refuses to sit idly by as his brother rots in jail and agrees to set bail if Fred will repay the debt by coming to the North Pole and help make toys for the upcoming Christmas season. But Fred isn’t nearly as productive as your average elf, and he’s got quite an attitude to boot. With Christmas fast approaching and Fred threatening to sideline Nicholas’ entire finely tuned operation, the brother that always struggled to get out from under his sibling’s substantial shadow finds out just how far the patience of a saint can be pushed before jolly old Santa reaches his breaking point. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Peanuts Holiday Collection [3 Discs] - $24.99 Includes:A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973) It’s Magic, Charlie Brown (1981) It’s Christmas Time Again, Charlie Brown (1992) This Is America, Charlie Brown: The Mayflower Voyagers (1994) A Charlie Brown Christmas As incredible as it seems, CBS head man James Aubrey originally vetoed his network’s presentation of the animated A Charlie Brown Christmas on the grounds that Charles M. Schultz’s round-headed protagonist was a “loser” who wouldn’t attract an audience! The story proposes that Charlie Brown is convinced that the true meaning of Christmas has been forgotten by his Peanuts friends, not to mention the rest of the world. “Psychiatrist” Lucy advises Charlie Brown to get into the holiday spirit by directing the kids’ upcoming Christmas play. Despite his utter lack of control over his cast, Charlie Brown takes his job seriously, even setting out to find a genuine Christmas tree to decorate the set instead of the usual aluminum job. But Charlie Brown’s tree is a scrawny, pathetic thing, and all seems lost. That is, until the rest of the Peanuts gang decide to pitch in and decorate the woebegone tree. An instant hit when first telecast December 9, 1965, A Charlie Brown Christmas has been rebroadcast virtually every year since. It was produced by Lee Mendelson and Bill Melendez, the latter providing the squeals and growls of Charlie Brown’s hyper-intelligent dog, Snoopy. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown It’s Halloween in Peanuts land. Charlie Brown is thrilled that at last he’s been invited to a costume party. Snoopy’s costume choice consists of the goggles and scarf of a World War I flying ace, who is ever in search of the elusive Red Baron. And Linus makes preparations for the arrival of The Great Pumpkin, whom he believes will rise from the pumpkin patch and deliver presents to all the good little boys and girls. At episode’s end, Charlie Brown finds himself with a trick-or-treat bag full of rocks; Snoopy once more fails to bring the Red Baron to heel; and Linus spends the entire night in the pumpkin patch, waiting in vain for the arrival of the Great Pumpkin (“But just wait till next year!”) The second of Lee Mendelson and Bill Melendez’ animated Peanuts specials, the 30-minute It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown was first telecast October 27, 1966. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Charlie Brown and the gang learn the true meaning of Thanksgiving after Peppermint Patty boldly arranges for everyone to celebrate the holiday at Charlie’s house. The story originally aired on television and like the other animated Peanuts specials, features a toe-tapping, wistful score by Vince Guaraldi and his trio. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi It’s Magic, Charlie Brown No synopsis available. It’s Christmas Time Again, Charlie Brown It’s Christmas time again for the whole Peanuts gang. This time around, Sally is all nerves over the upcoming school |
