I just bought a Vizio 37 "LCD TV, I tried to play a DVD and it looks like shit. Why is this? How I can fix it?

The DVD player is old and I think I only paid like $ 45 for it new, so it was not that good to begin with. I am a medical student and I'm on a tight budget. PLEASE HELP! This is the only kind of entertainment my wife and our daughters, and I can afford (we love watching movies together.)

If your TV is HDTV, it could be that you realize just how low the resolution is the standard DVD. Do not get me wrong, DVDs are excellent and show clear images – on standard TVs.
