Why lasers have little dots on them?

I was bored, playing with my laser pointer, and despite what my teacher science, mother, and every authority figure has told me, shining in his hand and looked at the point of light very closely. I noticed a pattern of small dots black. If I were to speculate, which makes these? It seems kind of like static on an old TV.

Is the interference pattern when light is reflected by rough surfaces. It is called laser speckle.
