The latest wave of 3D products has enraged some consumers and 3D fans. The problem is with the “Active Shutter” glasses being sold with HD 3D TV’s. These glasses work by alternating quick flashes of the images to each eye producing a 3D effect. This system not only requires expensive batteries to work but also may cause health problems for the user, so much so that manufacturers may be forced to issue health warnings with the glasses!

The real sting for consumers is the price which is around £100 ($150) per pair. For a family of four this means spending nearly as much on the glasses as the TV!! Definitely not what you would call value for money. From a practical viewpoint there are more issues such as compatibility; for example if you want to watch a movie with a group of friends at home you will all need the same make of glasses. So if you buy a Sony TV, with their active glasses, You can not watch 3D content on a different make of TV, Also these active glasses will  not work at the cinema, Sky3D or any venues showing live sport coverage. This situation has left many feeling that they are being taken advantage of and could be a stumbling block for the growing 3D industry.

A far simpler and easier to use format for 3D viewing are the passive polarised 3D glasses which are given out at cinemas for movies such as Avatar. This system requires no batteries, the glasses are cheap and the 3D effect is just as good as the active system but without the drawbacks. What many people are not aware of is that passive polarised glasses are compatible with Sky TV 3D channels, ESPN sports and Real D cinema making them far more useful than the active glasses.

The major manufacturers seem to have gone out of their way to over-complicate 3D purely for  profit and that is what is really at the heart of the concerns coming from consumers.
