Can I connect an external HD to my direct TV receiver?

We just got the HD receiver and are wondering if it’s possible to connect an external HD to it so that we can get more recording time. If you’ve done this, please let me know how to do this. There’s a USB port in the back, but how do I tell the receiver to record onto the external drive and not the receiver HD?

There should be a eSATA port to connect an external hard drive. The problem is, the receiver will not recognize both the internal drive and an external one at the same time and the specific drives and even the eSATA cable you use are important.
