Can a network hard drive is configured as a media server?

I currently see the programs that are stored on my PC through my TV via a PlayStation 3 and the media server installation on Windows Media Player. But now I'm wondering if I can not my PC on all the time and see things off to a hard drive connected to my wireless router? I'm sure if the Playstation will see the hard drive and play files off it? It would be nice to know if it will work before you buy a hard disk and the necessary adapters. Thanks for any help offered.

Most routers that have USB ports offer the possibility to connect an external USB hard drive and use a file server / media either through FTP or exchange Samba file. However, I recommend reading the specifications of your router, because, for example, I use a wireless router ASUS WL-500G USB 2 ports and even in the case said accepting external hard drivers, in practice, only work if it is formatted FAT32 file system of age, does not work with NTFS partition (such as XP and Vista use) unit. Since FAT32 is slower, do not accept the right folder and offers a bit less (not much less, but still) the usable space on the hard disk, I really do not want convert from NTFS to FAT32.
