Need help setting up DVD recorder?!

I'm having trouble setting up my DVD recorder and have spent the last 5 days trying to find out! Its becoming very frustrating! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Here is my dilemma: I have a RCA HDTV has a QAM tuner, and I put the cable directly from the wall, so no cable box. I have tried recording TV, but all I get is a black screen, so I figured I just needed to connect to an external tuner. so I went to buy a digital TV converter box for digital stream when I go to find the channel, nothing. So I went and bought an indoor antenna and connected to the converter box still has not found any channel! Any advice? Is it really necessary all this equipment? Apparently, doing nothing for me! If the source is cable, you need a decoder to output A / V, or a recorder DVD tuner can tune the cable. For digital TV broadcasting with the current box, you probably have a better antenna.
