How can you tell if an LCD display dark images as well?

I am researching and shopping for LCD TVs online. I know Some LCD monitors do not show the darker scenes, making it almost impossible to know what is happening. Is there anything in particular I should look at the specifications to indicate whether a TV show these scenes so dark?
