All that you should know before buying an LCD TV

Liquid Crystal Display Televisions (LCD TV`s) have become very popular in the current market. CRTs which were the hot favourites till a few years ago have now taken a back seat. The sales of LCD TV have been surpassing those of CRTs ever since 2007. This does not really come as a surprise as LCD TV`s are much thinner and lighter than CRTs. They are also available in various sizes; sizes much larger than what could ever be attained through a CRT are now possible thanks to the LCD technology.

Until a few years ago the cost of an LCD TV was daunting and one of the major deterrents to its popularity. However, in the last few years the LCD technology has matured considerably making the cost of LCD TV`s plummet. This coupled with the obvious advantages of the LCD TV has made it the most widely sold technology today. Other large screen competitors like plasma display panel and rear-projection television are fast loosing out to the much superior LCD television.

Factors that should be considered while buying an LCD TV set:

Screen size: This is one of the key factors that should be considered before buying an LCD TV. The general rule of bigger being better does not hold true here. The screen size should be determined by the amount of space you have. Larger screens should be seen from a greater distance else the picture might appear grainy and pixelated.  A 20-27 inch screen size should be seen from a minimum distance of 2 to 5 feet, 32 – 37 inch displays from 6 to 8 feet, 42-46 inch display from 10 to 14 feet and a 50 inch display from a minimum distance of 16 feet.

Resolution of picture: LCD TV`s with a better resolution would produce sharper and finer images. A minimum resolution of 1280×720 is required for an average viewing experience. Some LVD TVs have resolutions as high as 1920×1080, these are pretty expensive though.

Contrast: An LCD TV with a low contrast will make the dark images look grey while the bright images look blurred. A minimum contrast ratio of 10000:1 is a must in 32 inch LCD TV`s.

Motion Response Time: This is a must check for all the sports buffs out there. It determines the capability of an LCD TV to show fast moving images. A motion response time of 6 ms, 8 ms or 12 ms are all considered satisfactory. Anything lower and all fast moving images will just be a blur.

These are some of the important factors that should be taken into account while buying an LCD TV set. The higher power costs that will be incurred due to an LCD TV should also be thought of before the buy. LCD TV`s are not very power efficient. Most of the light that is being produced at the back of the screen is blocked before it reaches us, this basically entails that for enough amount of light to reach huge amount of power is required. A process of ‘dynamic lighting’ has been introduced in the modern LCD TV`s which helps in reducing the power intake by looking out for the darker areas in the image and reducing the power supply to these. Once this technology becomes a standard the power cost incurred by LCD TV`s should go down drastically.
