What are your views on the 3D technology used to research the crime scene?

A teacher at my school (University Iowa State) is working on 3D technology that allows the law to enter the crime scene in a virtual world. Color will be an exact replica of the scene with immense detail. What kind of impact do you think this will have on the cases? I am aware that there is a similar technology, but from what I've seen, nothing is so detailed or planned in an entire room. Thanks in advance to those who respond. I think it allows a long time vision of the original crime scene, but also can make a strong lack of physical evidence a case. Therefore the use of it could be used to revise the original scene of the crime but has not won since that could be used to condemn anyone because of the lack physical evidence.
